With the iPhone 12 series, Apple offers its first 5G smartphones. But 5G is not the only new feature in this series. As for the sensors, the Pro and Pro Max models have a LIDAR scanner which, like the iPad Pro, allows you to have a 3D image of the environment.
This sensor allows measurement applications to have more precision, and is also useful for many augmented reality apps. In addition, the LIDAR scanner allows you to benefit from some improvements in photography.
With all of its new features combined, the iPhone 12 series is a real success. This success is also comparable to that of the iPhone 6, sincethe mark of 100 million units sold has been crossedas quickly as after the release of the iPhone 6.
And currently, we are already starting to talk about the iPhone 13 and its variants. A priori, these will only be improved versions of the iPhone 12 series. But some had hoped that with the 2021 iPhones, Apple would offer the LIDAR scanner on all models.
A technology reserved (for the moment) for the most expensive models?
Unfortunately, this would not be the case: Apple would still reserve this 3D sensor for the Pro and Pro Max models. In any case, this is what an article recently published by the site 9to5Mac indicates, which relays DylanDKT, a source of “leaks” which is regularly relayed by the tech press.
“LiDAR will only be available on iPhone pro models. Earlier this year, it looked like Apple wanted to release all iPhone 13/12S models with LiDAR, but for one reason or another that won't happen this year », says DylanDKT. A priori, therefore, you will need to buy an iPhone 13 Pro or an iPhone 13 Pro Max if you want to take advantage of this technology.
The name “iPhone 13” would have finally been adopted
Since we are talking about iPhone 13, it should be remembered that for the moment, nothing is yet certain regarding the names of the next iPhones. Indeed, previous sources had suggested that Apple might avoid the number 13 because of people who have a phobia of it (this is called triskaidekaphobia).
But ultimately, according to Economic Daily News,Apple would have ended up adopting the name iPhone 13. In addition, there would be an iPhone 13, an iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max and even an iPhone 13 mini (despite the fact that everything suggests that the iPhone 12 mini did not appeal to the crowds).
The most important changes would be planned for 2022, with the iPhone 14. For example, according to some sources, there would no longer be an iPhone mini in 2022. On the other hand, Apple could offer a non-Pro model, therefore more affordable, but with an XXL screen.
