In 2018, Apple unveiled a robot developed by its engineers, called “Daisy”, which disassembled iPhones and sorted the components so that they could be reused in future products.
In a new interview with Reuters, Lisa Jackson, vice president of environment, policies and social initiatives at Apple, spoke about the Apple firm's latest ecological efforts. Apple has set itself the goal of stopping using the mining industry and manufacturing all of its products from recycled materials.
The recycling robot, Daisy, focuses on disassembling the iPhone, because according to Lisa Jackson, this is the priority because of the number of iPhones sold and in circulation. We can see this robot in action in the video below.
This robot is capable of dismantling and sorting the components of around 200 iPhones per hour, so that they can be reused in new machines. This robot has been produced in several copies and deployed in numerous sites around the world.
According to the new Reuters report, Apple is considering sharing the technology behind its Daisy robot with other companies and industries, including electric car manufacturers.
Apple says Daisy is a necessity to achieve its goal of “closed-loop” production, in order to do without the mining industry, which extracts rare metals from the earth, resources that are not inexhaustible. The Apple company wants to be able to manufacture its products 100% from recycled materials, starting with the iPhone.
Lisa Jackson, however, specifies that Apple is not “necessarily in competition with the people who operate the mines” and that “the miners have nothing to fear in this development”.
