It's no longer really a secret, Apple is developing a foldable version of its iPhone. In his latest report on the subject, the specialist in the Apple Ming Chi Kuo brand nevertheless mentions an amazing detail. Indeed, Apple would have planned to go back almost 10 years with this device.
The Cupertino firm would have chosen to abandon Face ID. The facial recognition system would be replaced on the iPhone Fold byTouch ID. According to her information, Apple would therefore like to return to a fingerprint reader, integrated into the phone locking button. A technology already used on the iPad for a few years.
A story of space?
One could imagine that the return of Touch ID is explained for economic reasons, but that does not seem to be the case here. Ming Chi Kuo rather mentions structural problems on this new iPhone. Apple would simply not have found the necessary place for the TrueDepth reader inson iPhone Fold.
However, everything is not yet lost. The folding smartphone should not arrive before the end of 2026, or 2027. Apple has a lot of time in this interval to develop an even more successful product, with Face ID. Several rumors also ensure in this regard, that Touch ID is only seen as a “plan B” in the event of failure in the attempted miniaturization of the facial recognition system.
An IPhone too fine?
The argument of a lack of space on a folding iPhone may seem fairly counter-intuitive. Indeed, with a screen slab over 7 inches, the iPhone Fold will be by far the largest smartphone ever produced by Apple. A major gain on the screen, which does not necessarily mean gains inside the product.
To renderl’iPhone FoldInteresting, Apple works hard to make it as fine as possible. The idea would be to have a device 5.5 millimeters thick (once unfolded). A huge technical challenge, which considerably reduces the place available inside this iPhone.
To bring all the components, Apple will be forced to make choices, and Face ID could be one of the abandoned options on the side of the road by the apple brand. Rumors of the next months on this subject should come and confirm or deny this hypothesis.
