Until now, Apple's products have been relatively spared from the disputes between the Trump administration and the Chinese government, however that could soon change.
Indeed, according to an interview with Donald Trump, published in the Wall Street Journal, the American president would consideran extension of taxes on products imported from Chinaand soldin the United States. The US price ofiPhone et MacBookscouldincreasesubstantially.
Trump is due to meet Chinese leader Xi Jinping this week to discuss, among other things, trade agreements between the two countries. If the negotiations do not go in the right direction, Trump says he couldapply a taxon products previously spared.
He mentions in particulara 10% tax on iPhones and MacBookswhich are imported from China and sold in the United States.
From January, the American government could therefore increase customs duties by10 to 25%on products manufactured and imported from China. That would be around $200 billion.
Apple products are currently tax free. If this tax is ever applied, it would increase the price of iPhones and MacBooks for American buyers.
Over the past few months, Apple has sent several letters to the Trump administration, asking not to apply these new taxes. Because according to the Apple firm this would have a negative impact on American growth and the competitiveness of American products.
