The iPhone SE 4 2025 ushers in something new for Apple

The iPhone SE 4 has been in the news for several months.Expected for early 2025, this new entry-level model should mark a turning point in Apple's strategy. The Cupertino company seems to want to do much more than a simple update. This smartphone could in fact serve as a testing ground for a key technology developed internally.

An in-house chip for 5G

While some rumors predicted an introduction from the iPhone 18, Apple is planning according to new informationto equip the iPhone SE 4 with its own 5G modem. A first for the brand, which has until now used Qualcomm chips.

This decision marks an important step in Apple's quest for complete independence. The firm was until now obliged to use Qualcomm modems. It of course took the opportunity to develop its own, taking inspiration from the Qualcomms which equip the iPhone, and at the same time taking advantage of a previous acquisition.

As a reminder, Apple bought Intel's modem division in 2019 for $1 billion. Since then, she has been working hard on her own solutions. The choice of the iPhone SE 4 as the first equipped model is not trivial. It allows Apple to test its technology on a smaller scale before a massive deployment, even if the first version of the chip could have certain limitations.

Necessary compromises?

According to some sources, shewould not supportmillimeter waves(mmWave). These frequencies offer ultra-fast speeds, but over a short range. The absence of this technology would be a strategic choice for Apple. It would simplify the design and reduce costs.

Millimeter waves are also not deployed on a large scale, far from it. In France, for example, they are currently being tested. This therefore leaves room for Apple to integrate them later. For an entry-level model like the iPhone SE 4, it seems like an acceptable compromise. Users will still have access to 5G, with performance adapted to their needs.
