A new study from Sensor Tower takes stock of the mobile app market during the first quarter of the year, which has just ended. We learn, without much surprise, that it is once again the App Store which generates the most turnover for developers with20.51 billion eurosestimated over the period compared to 10.07 billion for Google Play.
The figures ofrapport, which are of course all based on estimates and on a global scale, also show us which applications would be the most popular over the period. At the top of the list, we find the Chinese social networkTikTokwith over 70 million downloads, followed by YouTube (40M+), WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and CapCut. If this name is foreign to you, know that it is a video editor, whose success is therefore probably linked to that of the first two places on the podium.
The top 10 apps in the world:
- TikTok
- YouTube
- CapCut
- Messenger
- Google Maps
- GMail
Sensor Tower also notes a strong breakthrough in apps in the fieldmedical, perhaps explained by the progression of COVID-19 in certain regions such as Brazil, Indonesia or South Korea.

The games
If we look at the case of Europe now, we see thatSubway Surfers y would have been the most installed game between January and December. An unbeatable classic, since it should celebrate its tenth anniversary in about a month.
Still on the gaming side, users would be much more inclined to choose theiPadrather than the iPhone. The models in question are not specified, but it is true that the screens currently offered, which range from 8.3″ to 12.9″, are much more comfortable for a game. Even more so when we know that Apple's tablet operating system now supports third-party accessories such as controllers, mice and keyboards.
The top 10 games on the Old Continent are as follows:
- Subway Surfers
- Coloring Match
- Hay Day
- Clash Royale
- Roblox
- Count Masters
- Wordle
- 8 Pall Pool
- Fishdom
- Magic Tiles 3
Among the other interesting statistics, we will also note an astonishing regression in the iOS games sector since it only managed to garner “only”12.14 billion eurosworldwide at the start of 2022, compared to 12.43 billion in the first quarter of 2021. That is a significant drop in public spending of 2.3%, perhaps linked to the deconfinement in certain countries such as France.
For comparison, on Android, transactions would reach 7.62 billion euros in the first quarter of 2022 compared to 8.84 billion euros in 2021 (-13.8%).
Methodology
To obtain these results, Sensor Tower hides pieces of code in the apps of certain publishers in order to track the habits of their users.A practice denounced by certain media, and who must also face thenew measures from Apple to better protect our personal data.
Note also that today's figures do not take into account taxes paid by studios after receiving payments from the App Store, nor revenue from advertising or reimbursements to customers.
