The Apple Vision Pro is overdesigned according to this old Android and Meta framework

Hugo Barra isa former Alphabet executive, who held several positions at Google, until reaching that of vice president of Android, which he honored for a few years. In 2017 however, the man joined Mark Zuckerberg asHead of the Oculus division, until 2021.

As a reminder, Oculus is the name given to Meta's first virtual reality headsets at the time, but they are no longer sold.

An over-engineered north star?

Hugo Barra does not hesitate to praise Apple's Mixed reality headset on the one hand, but downgrades it on the other, albeit with kindness. He first describes the Device as “north star» that the sector needed. In a post where he shares his impressions of the headset, he states:

Back when I was Oculus, I semi-seriously joked with our team (and usually got a lot of heat for it!) that the best thing that could happen to us was to see Apple enter the gaming industry. virtual reality and become a direct competitor to Oculus.

A vision half shared by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The latter affirmed on Instagram, shortly after the release of the Vision Pro, that his Quest 3 should see its number of sales explode thanks to Apple. Particularly because according to him,it can do everything the Vision Pro does, for only 500 euros. That is 3000 euros less than the Apple mixed reality headset. If Hugo Barra shares the same vision as Zuckerberg concerning the fact that the Vision Pro will popularize virtual reality, he for his part thinks that the headset still has undeniable advantages. He seems to be more objective than Mark Zuckerberg, probably because he no longer works at Meta. Hugo Barra writes in his article:

While there are still major gaps to be filled in future versions of Vision Pro hardware, this level of connection with the real world is something no other VR headset has ever managed to deliver.

What are the major gaps?

According to Hugo Barra, the Apple headset is to startway too heavy. It is true that it weighs almost 150 grams more than the Meta Quest 3, probably because of the large number of components present there. According to him, Apple played it safe by adding many sensors that the headset could have done without, while still offering the same experience. The Vision Pro has a total of 14 sensors, while the Quest 3 only has 7, and for the Quest Pro, we go up to 9.

The man then talks about the headset screen, claiming thatApple offered unmatched qualityin this regard, with a new way of displaying pixels, but which nevertheless has some shortcomings. He considers the Apple Vision Pro in its first version as a well-developed development kit, which will revolutionize the industry in the future.

Hugo Barra's article is very interesting andworth a read.We have presented here only a brief part of what is discussed there.

About Apple Vision Pro,you may soon be able to buy it in France.
