Apple's plans in virtual reality and augmented reality are difficult to hide. Although the Cupertino company has not yet made an announcement on the subject, many rumors are already circulating about its future AR/VR headset.
Previously, sources indicated that Apple could unveil its first headset combining virtual reality and augmented reality at the WWDC conference, which is scheduled for June. But today, it is less and less likely that the product will be revealed this year.
In an article published this week, our colleagues at 9to5Mac relay an analyst, Jeff Pu, who would have made new predictions concerning this future Apple product. According to the article, the release of the product could be pushed back to early 2023.
Previously,Mark Gurman, a journalist at Bloomberg, indicated that in any case, the helmet should not be presented at the WWDC conference in June. He indicated that Apple could present the product either at the end of 2022 or in 2023.
But it is also possible that Apple's AR/VR headset will be released at the end of 2022, but in limited quantities. This is the opinion reportedly shared by another analyst, Ming Chi Kuo.
Apple will compete with Meta
In any case, once this product is unveiled, Apple will become a direct competitor to Meta, Mark Zuckerberg's company. Indeed, while Meta is one of the leaders of thevirtual reality, it also develops augmented reality glasses.
Recently, unofficial sources indicated that Zuckerberg's goal would be the company's first AR glasses in 2024. But at the moment, the group does not yet have a functional and wearable prototype for these glasses.
A market that will be multiplied by 10!
At the moment, virtual reality and augmented reality is a very small market. However, for the next few years, Counterpoint Research predicts significant growth.
According to this company, the market size would increase tenfold, from 11 million units shipped in 2021, to 105 million units in 2025.
“North America will remain the largest XR (virtual reality and augmented reality) market, given the size and advancement of its consumer and professional users”, comments Harmeet Singh Walia, senior analyst at Counterpoint, in a study published in January.“This demand will be met by the biggest XR brands of the moment like Oculus and highly anticipated new entrants like Apple. On the other hand, Europe, although currently a major XR market given the size of its middle class, is expected to experience relatively slow growth due to content limitations exacerbated by a lack of common language. The fastest growth is therefore expected in China, which will benefit from early adoption of 5G and a common language facilitating content creation. »
