Apple is a very discreet company. And generally, it shares very little information (or even none at all) on its future products before the official presentation. This is valid for the race for artificial intelligence. The Cupertino company has already confirmed that it is working on generative artificial intelligence, but at the moment we have no information on the product that is being developed by its engineers.
However, it is expected that this work on generative AI will allow Apple to offer a new version of Siri which will benefit from new capabilities comparable to those of ChatGPT or Bard. While waiting for the presentation of this new Siri, Apple nevertheless made a very discreet announcement related to artificial intelligence.
In summary, the firm has published a “framework” called MLX, designed to develop machine learning on machines using Apple Silicon chips.“The design of MLX is inspired by frameworks like PyTorch, Jax and ArrayFire. A notable difference between these frameworks and MLX is the unified memory model. Arrays in MLX live in shared memory. Operations on MLX tables can be performed on any supported device type without making data copies. Currently supported device types are CPU and GPU,”we read in a document.
One small step
This announcement is not as impressive as the recent onepresentation of Gemini by Google, For example. However, MLX could be an important tool to facilitate the deployment of features based on machine learning (another branch of AI) on Apple products.
In any case, this news illustrates the fact that Apple is well in the race for artificial intelligence and that its engineers are working to offer more features based on AI (whether generative or not). Apple is somewhat forced to rush into this area, since it is squeezed by the competition.
Google is preparing to offer significant improvements to Android using generative AI. And Samsung has already announced its Gauss model, a competitor to ChatGPT that is used internally, but will soon be deployed on products. Samsung also announced that it will deploy a series of new features based on AI,called Galaxy AI.
