Disassembling AirPods 4 would be a real ordeal

Apple recently launched its AirPods 4, promising an improved audio experience. These new wireless headphones integrate active noise reduction for the first time on a non-Pro model. But what are they really hiding under their white shell?

While Apple already gave us some answersin a recent interview, iFixit offers us today a complete teardown. Enough to complete our knowledge on these new Apple jewels. The company is known for its in-depth analyzes that evaluate the repairability of high-tech products. Their verdict on Apple's new headphones is likely to make people cringe.

A nightmare for repairers?

Disassembling the AirPods 4 proved to be quite a challenge. The iFixit expert had to contend with an excessive amount of adhesive. Despite the use of specialized tools and heat, the operation quickly turned into a disaster. The internal components, including the battery, are firmly glued.

This design makes it virtually impossible to repair without destroying the device. The iFixit technician did not hide his frustration with this arduous task. He says: “It was a real ordeal to get to this point, and I destroyed the whole thing to get there. » On the user side, however, this seems to be a good sign. Once in the hands, the feeling of a premium product is there. At the same time considering the price…

A clear score

Once again, iFixit has awarded the latest AirPods 4 arepairability score of 0/10. This result illustrates the impossibility for an average user to repair their headphones. Even for professionals, the task is extremely complex. Not a surprising score given the size of the headphones and the case.

This score contrasts with that ofAirPods Max, Apple's premium headset. They get on their side6/10. They are actually easier to dismantle and repair thanks to their size. iFixit carried out the teardown of the versionUSB-Crecently released. This variant maintains the same rating as the modelLightning.

Additionally, iFixit compared the versions with and without active noise reduction of the AirPods 4. Surprisingly, few differences were found. Only the placement of a microphone varies slightly between the two models.

This analysis raises questions about the durability of AirPods. With annual sales estimated at75 million units, their environmental impact is considerable. The impossibility of easily repairing them poses a real ecological problem.

Apple is making effortson the repairability of certain products like the iPhone, but it is more complicated for AirPods. Users must currently simply replace their faulty headphones rather than repair them.
