The Apple brand has decided to classify the very first MacBook Pro released with a TouchBar inthe “vintage” product categoryof the brand. A choice which could have quite a few consequences, particularly on the repair costs for this computer.
Before going into the details of this name at Apple, a little background is necessary. We are in 2016 and Apple presents a new version of its 13 and 15 inch MacBook Pro. The latter will have a historical particularity, it will be tactile.
With the arrival of the TouchBar, reactions are not long in coming. Everyone is giving their opinion on the latest computer gadget, which has also just lost its classic charger in favor of a single USB-C port. With their Intel Core i5 or i7 chips (depending on the version) these MacBook Pros are still quite interesting today in terms of performance, although the arrival of Apple Silicon chips has completely reshuffled the cards.
Products more difficult to repair x
The arrival of this product, alongside the 12-inch MacBooks from 2016, and the MacBook Air from 2015 in Apple's “vintage” category makes the repair of these devices more difficult. Parts will become increasingly rare, with a few exceptions.
This classification happens automatically for all products that Apple has no longer sold on its official store for 5 years. As of August 1,the 2016 MacBook Prowill therefore be accompanied in its fall by the MacBook of 2016 and the MacBook Air of 2015.
Other devices are also affected, the 21.5-inch iMac as well as the 5K version. Last product taken into account, the 9.7-inch iPad Pro marketed in March 2016. In two years, these devices will go from “vintage” to “obsolete” so it will be impossible to have them repaired in the Apple Store or in the approved shops, without the slightest exception.
