Netflix's price rises in the US

Netflix, the most popular SVOD platform in the world (for the moment) has once again decided to increase its prices across the Atlantic. This increase comes almost two years after the first, in an increasingly competitive market where Netflix's dominance is being undermined.

If the first subscription package is still below the symbolic $10 mark, the second plan with two connected screens increases by one dollar and goes to $14. This is the most widespread offer to date, it alone represents nearly 50% of Netflix subscriptions. As for the “premium” offer with up to 4 screens, you will now have to pay 18 dollars.

Netflix: the colossus with feet of clay

This increase comes as Netflix has announced losses in recent months. If sharing accounts has become commonplace, the arrival of Apple TV+or Disney+ put a stop to the platform's subscriptions, making it loss-making.

Because yes, Netflix is a company in fragile health. With large investments put into the creation of original series, the platform must constantly find a sufficient number of subscribers to replenish the company's coffers. But when the latter leave for Apple TV+ or Disney+ the balance is no longer in balance. Netflix has therefore logically increased the prices of its subscription offer in order to sustain its financial model.

An increase in prices which has so far only affected Uncle Sam's country but it is a safe bet that it will cross the Atlantic in the coming months to affect our bank accounts, here in Europe.

Netflix more expensive, Apple TV+ still free

It remains to be seen whether this price increase will have a real impact on the number of subscribers to the platform. Long feared, the first price increase made by Netflix in January 2019 did not have a significant impact on subscriptions.

Today, most users leaving the platform would actually do so to join another SVOD service, with Disney+ most often being responsible for this migration.

But on the Cupertino side, the apple brand is not left out. May be more discreet in mainstream media, the Apple TV+ platformseems to be succeeding in finding a place in the already very saturated SVOD market.

Faced with Netflix's price increase, Apple's service is even opting for the exact opposite. Apple TV+ is available for free trial until February 2021.
