Studio Display : futur concurrent des Echo Show d’Amazon ?

When the very first Mac Studio was released in 2022, Apple took the opportunity to update its range of monitors and presentle Studio Display. The latter has since not had the right to any modification. But according to information from Mark Gurman, things are about to change.

In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, the Bloomberg agency journalist explains that the development of the next Studio Display has joined another Apple program. The Cupertino company has been working for several years on the design of a “smart tablet” capable of controlling connected objects in a home. The device would thus become a direct competitor to Amazon's “Echo Show” or Google's “Nest Hub”.

According to Gurman, the next version of the Studio Display, in addition to being a very high-quality computer screen, could become this famous “smart tablet” serving as a central hub for all the connected objects in a home. The journalist explains in detail that this new version of the monitor would be equipped with an A13 chip giving access to a certain computing power.

As a reminder, the A13 chip is currently used by Apple in its iPhone 11 and SE (2020 generation). This processor is also used in the design of the Apple Watch Series 6 although there are some variations between the smartwatch chip and that of the iPhone.

A Mac version of “Stand By” mode?

During the presentation of iOS 17 on June 5, Apple notably unveiledle mode « stand by ». The latter should allow the iPhone (thanks to the Always-on Display technology present in the iPhone 14 Pro) to always remain on with a “saver” screen displaying the time and some information.

This same mode could be transposed to macOS and used on a suitable monitor. If this is the choice made by Apple, the screen of the next Studio Display will have to be adaptive, changing its refresh rate depending on usage. Today the iPhone 14 Pro is capable of going from 1 Hz (one image per second) to 120 Hz.
