The iMac M3 review reveals 4 strong points, but also some disappointments

The iMac M3 has recently been available. Presented last October by Apple, the beast takes over the design of its predecessor step by step with a base price of1 599 eurosfor the version with two USB-C ports. Four colors are available with this one: blue, green, pink or silver. A model with a more powerful chip (ten graphics card cores instead of eight) is also offered from 1,829 euros. The latter has two additional universal sockets, with also three exclusive colors: yellow, orange and mauve.

But then, what does the value proposition really have to seduce? For Romain Vitt ofPresse-citron.net, who was able to test the device in real conditions, this is the case. Especially because this all-in-one computer has a “beautiful screen“. It must be said that its imposing 24-inch Retina panel actually benefits from a4.5K definition, almost as much as the iMac Pro presented in 2017. Remember, however, that the new iMac is satisfied with a brightness of only five hundred nits: that's really not much. Especially compared, for example, to a 16-inch MacBook Pro, capable of reaching one thousand six hundred nits in peak brightness.

Top performance

The iMac M3, as its name suggests, is therefore powered by the eponymous chip. This is announced as particularly fast by the test ofPresse-citron.net, who believes, among other things, that the machine is much more “muscl[e]” than its predecessor. The latter was equipped with the M1 processor. For our colleagues, the new basic model remains “sufficient[…] for everyday use”. This is a version equipped with only eight gigabytes of RAM, the entry option also offered by Apple for the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.

The media also recalls that the iMac M3 is displayed as24% more powerfulthan the iMac M1, according to official figures provided by the manufacturer. The latter has the motherboard assembled by a subcontractor in Asia. This is TSMC, today considered the twelfth largest capitalization on the planet, where the Apple firmeasily ranks first on the list.

Watch out for accessories

Despite everything, as we mentioned previously, some shadows darken the picture of this new iMac. First of all, on the connectivity side. The number of sockets is indeed very limited, and no HDMI port is included, for example. The same goes for the SD card reader: you have to opt for a MacBook Pro, from Apple, to be entitled to it. Whereas with the iMac, an adapter is required.

With this, the Magic Mouse remains impractical, particularly because the wireless mouse cannot be used while it is charging.Rumorssuggested that a new, more ergonomic model would be in the pipeline. But we still haven't seen the color of it, for the moment.

And you, what is your opinion on this new iMac?
