WhatsApp is testing a function that recalls the heyday of internet messaging

When smartphones were in their infancy, teenagers in the 2000s spent hours personalizing their statuses with their favorite songs on MSN Messenger or MySpace. These little digital rituals, long gone, are preparing to make their comebackthanks toWhatsApp.

The return of personal anthems online

On MSN Messenger, the functionWhat I listen toallowedautomatically display the song titlecurrently listening in its status. On MySpace, each profile could be personalized with a song that played automatically during the visit. This is a bit like what you can find on Discord today when you listen to a song on Spotify.

WhatsApp is about to modernize this concept: A new musical note-shaped button will appear in the status options, right next to the tools for adding text or stickers. By tapping on it, users access a complete music catalog, the same as that available onInstagram, to choose the song they want to share.

A functionality redesigned for 2025

This new version ofWhat I listen towill offer more control than its ancestors. For photo statuses, it will be possible to select a 15-second excerpt from any song. For videos, music can accompany the entire duration of the clip. The interface allows you to choose precisely the passage of the song you want – for example, the chorus or a particular verse.

A plus compared to the times: by clicking on the music, users can be redirectedto the artist's Instagram profile. Practical for discovering new gems!

This function, for nowonly available in betafor some users, should be deployed for allin the coming weeks. A very nice little wind of nostalgia that we won't shy away from.

  • WhatsApp revives the concept of musical statuses from the 2000s by allowing you to share songs in your statuses.
  • Users will be able to choose personalized extracts of their favorite songs to accompany photos or videos.
  • The feature, currently in the testing phase, will soon be rolled out on a large scale to everyone.
