Apple Watches can already measure stress, here's how

Apple has never yet presented a feature allowing it to measure a user's stress level with an Apple Watch. But the science is not so categorical about Apple's connected watch.

According to a study conducted by the Cleveland Clinic, the Apple Watch has a heart rate sensor precise enough to take into account moments of “stress”. With the “heart rate variability” feature, the watch already monitors its owner’s exposure to stress.

The data is not fully used by Apple, but third-party applications exist to take this information into account and give the keys to users. The first way to get your hands on this data is to go to the watch settings.

Inthe iPhone Health appthen in “browse”, “heart” and finally “heart rate variability”. It is thus possible to see, in the form of a graph, the data over the last six months.

Applications to detect stress in time

Third-party solutions likeGentler Streakhowever, exist to analyze this data.« Training Today »also offers a study of heart rate variability to find episodes of stress.

Finally,Stress Monitor for Watchis, as its name suggests, an application dedicated to this task. Stress affects 9 out of 10 people today. It is described by the medical world as one of the evils of the century. In France it would cost social security more than a billion euros every year.

As a reminder, stress is caused in 76% of cases by work, which is by far the first reason cited by the French. Detecting stress with a connected device can be a very good reflex, particularly for “calming down” moments of stress with relaxation or breathing exercises.

Apple is expected to update its Apple Watches next September. We still know little about the future of Apple's connected watches, but the development of a functionality measuring stress is one of the brand's priorities.
