Starting in September, Apple employees will have to return to the office at least three days a week. This is what emerges from an internal memo that our colleagues atThe Verge.
Tim Cook explains on this subject:
For all that we were able to accomplish while many of us were apart, the truth is that something essential was missing during this past year: human contact. Video conferencing has reduced the distance between us, that's for sure, but there are some things it just can't replicate.
Long teleworking sessions must be approved by management
From then on, employees will come to the office on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and they will be able to work remotely on Wednesdays and Fridays. Some, whose in-person work is recognized as necessary, will even stay on site all week. Teleworking is also considerably regulated. Thus, each employee will be able to work a maximum of two weeks per year remotely but their request must be approved by managers.
And Tim Cook concludes: “I know I'm not alone in missing the buzz of activity, the energy, creativity and collaboration of our in-person meetings and the sense of community we all built».
On closer inspection, the Apple manager has always been rather critical of teleworking. In September 2020, during an interview given toThe Atlantic,he explainedThus : "Honestly, it's not like being together physically. And so I can't wait until everyone can come back to the office. (…) We designed our entire office so that there are common areas where people gather and talk about different things. And so I think the vast majority of us can't wait to be back in the office. You know, I hope it happens next year, who knows exactly when that will be.»
