What the Apple Vision Pro figures tell us raises questions

According to the journalist ofBloombergMark Gurman, sales of Apple Vision Pro, after having experienced phenomenal success at the start of the year, would have almost stopped. Our source of the day estimates that the demonstrations offered by the manufacturer in the Apple Store would only convince a few people per week! This could in particular be explained by a relatively high entry price, given that the product costs a whopping $3,499 in the United States. In France, we should have to spend the tidy sum of more than 4,000 euros to afford the device duringto go out.

Among the other potential factors in this decline, we can easily assume that the limited comfort offered by the Apple Vision Pro has something to do with it. The device, although theoretically offering unlimited autonomy by connecting it to an external battery, would thus not benot comfortable enough to wear over time. However, it is rumored that Apple is preparing a version that is not only more affordable, but also more comfortable, for 2027. This edition, however, risks being less efficient, but could appeal more to the general public. For its part, the manufacturer has not yet confirmed the news but a presentation keynote could take place in two to three years.

What does this trend tell us?

Concretely, this information is not the most surprising. If many users flocked to the Apple Vision Pro in its early days, it was also becausethe first stocks sold out so quicklythat Apple asked to wait several months before being able to receive the headset. Snowball effect obliges: those who heard about it, and more particularly among already seasoned users of the Apple ecosystem, then jumped on pre-orders. These started on January 19 in the United States, and the first customers were able to use the mixed reality headset from February 2 thereafter. 200,000 units would have found a buyer.

Internally, however, it's difficult to know what's going on. Leaks suggest that Apple wants in the long termreplace the iPhone with augmented reality solutions, and these sales of the Apple Vision Pro at half mast are of course not the most encouraging sign to pursue this strategy. But this is therefore a long-term one, and for the moment nothing tells us that the Apple firm intends to revise its forecasts downwards. Since this announcement by Mark Gurman, the Wall Street stock market does not seem to have reacted significantly to the news.

Our opinion on the Apple Vision Pro

For us, the Apple Vision Pro is undoubtedly the best mixed reality headset on the market today. Its 4K screens offer sublime image quality and the possibility ofenjoy all your Mac apps on the go, without having to take your computer and monitors with you, is a real plus. Despite everything, it is obvious that certain functionalities are more than useless for us, such asEyeSight. However, to offer us this solution, Apple had to invest in an additional screen, even though it is precisely this type of component that costs the most. Too bad for the final bill.

In addition, blocking the user's natural view forces Apple to also add additional cameras to the Vision Pro, to capture images of the external environment in order to retransmit them inside the headset. This is necessary for AR apps, when the manufacturer could simply have offered us a frame with a transparent display with “real” augmented reality. Here too, it is cheaper and sufficient. Even more so for a professional target, for whom VR is often of anecdotal importance.

As with the first iPhone of the name or the Apple Watch from 2015, however, the Vision Pro is a trial which has every chance of being quickly transformed. We are therefore firmly convinced that visionOS will be able to find a place on the market, even if today the Meta alternatives still have a bright future ahead of them. But the sector is not really the same, since the headset offers a nomadic workstation, while the owner of Facebook focuses on entertainment.

  • Interest in Apple Vision Pro declines
  • Ultimately, however, Apple wants to make augmented reality one of its flagship revenue factors.
  • This does not particularly worry us, for the moment
