The iPhone 12 was a hit and analysts are even talking about a supercycle comparable to the one we observed a few years ago after the release of the iPhone 6. This success is largely attributed to the arrival of the 5G, for the first time, on an Apple product.
Today, the firm is preparing to launch the iPhone 13 series. And until now, the new series has been described as an improved version of the iPhone 12 series. But ultimately, the iPhone 13 could well include an important innovation that could even be more interesting than 5G: a chip capable of connecting to satellites and provide a connection even when iPhone is out of range of telephone networks.
This new rumor is very recent. As reported by The Verge, it comes from a note that was published by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, one of the main sources of “leaks” regarding upcoming Apple products.
A crazy rumor about the iPhone 13
In essence, this note from Kuo would indicate that the iPhone 13 could have a custom Qualcomm chip capable of connecting to satellites in low earth orbit or LEO (low earth orbit) satellite. And this would allow access to networks without going through operators.
Obviously, for the moment, this is just a rumor and Apple is not in the habit of confirming information about its products before making it official. However, it should be remembered that as early as 2019, rumors already suggested that Apple was interested in satellites.
It should also be noted that recently, LEO type satellites have been in the news a lot, since this is the type of satellite used by SpaceX's Starlink service to provide an internet connection without going through telephone operators. LEO satellites are interesting because, thanks to the (relatively) short distance from the earth's surface, they provide low latency compared to what is offered by other satellite internet connection providers.
And currently, everything suggests that Starlink (which is still in the beta phase) will be a hit. Recently, Elon Musk announced that this service has alreadyshipped more than 100,000 stations allowing connection to its network. On the other hand, more than half a million orders have already been received.
Like Starlink, the satellite connection that Apple could offer should not be intended to replace the services of operators (which are essential partners for Apple). This type of service is more intended for users who are in areas not covered by operator networks.
