The iPhone 15 has a new chip, manufactured by Qualcomm

The iPhone 15 Pro is quite different from the iPhone 15, but the two phones also have things in common. Apple models, for example, have the same 5G modem, manufactured by Qualcomm. It was the iFixit teams who confirmed this information on social networks in recent days. Apple did not talk in detail about the 5G modem during the presentation of the phone on September 12.

Already last year, Apple made no difference between the iPhone 14 and the high-end versions of the phone. They were all equipped with a 5G x65 modem. This year, all modems have been updated, and the iPhone 15 has an x70 chip. The arrival of this new processor should make it possible to gain performance.

According to a benchmark test by SpeedSmart, Qualcomm's x70 modem offers 24% faster 5G speeds compared to the iPhone 14 lineup. These changes are more or less visible depending on the carrier. In the United States Verizon seems to be the big winner from this change. Tests must still be carried out in France to find out what impact this chip change has on Apple phones depending on their operator.

Apple and Qualcomm: a story that lasts

Apple has been manufacturing its own motherboards for iPhones for several years, but since the arrival of 5G modems, Qualcomm, Apple's neighbor, has taken care of chip manufacturing. Qualcomm won the right to work for Apple in court.

In 2019 the firm sued Apple over a history of stolen patents. Although the trial was never concluded, the two companiesended up reaching an agreement. Apple will use 5G modems manufactured by Qualcomm in its iPhones for several years.

In the shadows, however, the Cupertino company is preparing for the future and is developing its own 5G modem. Long mentioned as a major change in iPhones, this processor could arrive in 2024 or 2025 according to the latest rumors.
