With the iPhone 15, Apple has taken a leap forward in battery durability. The latter issupposed to preserveat least80% of its capacitypendant1000 cyclesaccording to the apple company, in ideal conditions.
It could be that the ideal conditions mentioned by Apple do not take MagSafe into account. iFixit claims that Apple's wireless charging involveslarge energy losses, and some believe it has something to do with their battery health rapidly degrading. This is the case of journalist Michael Simon of Macworld, who recently noticed a drastic drop in the battery capacity of his iPhone 15 Pro Max.
No loss in 6 months, then a drastic drop
Michael Simon claims that the battery retained its full capacity for six months, witha continuous 100% health status, before starting to deteriorate rapidly. He says he was surprised at how durable his 15 Pro Max's battery was, remembering that his previous 14 Pro Max lost about one percent of its capacity every month.
However, he quickly became disillusioned at the beginning of April, when he noticed thatwear and tear accelerated unexpectedly, with a loss of one percent per week. While for 6 months, his iPhone displayed a battery health status of 100%, this figure is nowdropped to 92%, within about 2 months.
Because of MagSafe?
As specified by Apple, all iPhone 15s are designed to maintain the state of health of the batteries above80% for 1000 cycles,in ideal conditions. However,Michael Simon is only at 270 cycles, and his Pro Max is now only 92%.
He also consulted a report from iFixit which mentions that MagSafe causes a lot of energy loss. Now he thinks Apple's wireless charging technology is the cause. Since the iOS 17.4 update at the end of March, several users have reported losses of the same type, and some have directly accused Apple of planned obsolescence. However, Apple implemented and then improved a feature recently, which allows you toincrease iPhone battery life.
Michael Simon fears for the lifespan of his iPhone 15 Pro Max, because according to his calculations the state of its battery should be around 85% during theiPhone 16 release, next fall.
