It's done: after long months of development and delays, the Matter standard in itsversion 1.0is out. This new standard aims to make connected objects from different brands more easily compatible with each other, which has sometimes posed a problem until now, particularly when manufacturers develop their own apps.
Among the companies that collaborated in the creation of Matter, we surprisingly find Apple, even though the firm is known for remaining relatively independent in general. At Cupertino, it’sHomeKitwhich is responsible for propelling the various third-party accessories for the home such asIkea stores, security cameras or LED bulbs.
First products certified in 2022?
The first delivery of Matter means above all thatbuilders will be able to start designingarticles equipped with the necessary code to be compatible with the standard. The same goes for those who already have a range of peripherals on the market and who simply want to update them accordingly.
For its part, Apple has not announced precisely which of its devices will be affected. However, we know that many use theHomePodor its little brother, the HomePod mini, to control the equipment in their home by voice. It would therefore be logical to see the current versions - or at least their successors - get up to date with Matter 1.0, but let's not forget that Apple also likes to maintain a certain exclusivity with its ecosystem. Forget about any formal pairing between your Samsung mobile and an Apple Watch Ultra.
A wide range of solutions covered
Among the products that are supported by the Matter standard, we can also citeventilation, heating, air conditioning or locks. Manufacturers who offer HomeKit compatible items with such technologies are found both in France and internationally, with for example Aqara, Nanoleaf, Netatmo, Belkin, Eve, Eufyor Philipsto name only the brands available in the Apple Store.
Are you also waiting for the arrival of Matter on your devices controllable from the iPhone? If so, which ones and in order to be able to order them from which operating system other than those of Apple?
