8.5 billion dollars (≈ 7 billion euros): this is the revenue earned in 2019 by Apple thanks to video games, according to a very serious analysisWall Street Journal. To get there, the American media relied on relatively reliable data. Some come from the lawsuit between the publisher of the App Store and Fortnite (To better understand, read these articles) when others come from public registers.
The latter prove in particular that with such an amount, Cupertino has raised more resources thanks to gaming than Activision Blizzard, Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft combined. However, these two design the two most popular home consoles on the planet, namely the PlayStation and the Xbox. But then, how can we explain such success when Apple continues to generate the majority of its profits thanks to Macs and iPhones? Precisely, the latter have nothing to do with it.
Thank you services
Indeed, thanks to the Apple Arcade platform launched more than two years ago, Steve Jobs' firm now earns 4.99 euros per month as soon as an Internet user subscribes to it. But this is of course not the best vector of return for it: in fact, the 30% commissions taken by iOS on all in-app purchases would account for the largest share of the pie.
According tothe latest quarterly results shared by Applemoreover, the software category would account for almost a quarter of its total revenues, or 17.5 billion dollars (approximately 15+ billion euros). The difference is made up by other services such as AppleCare+ insurance, Apple TV+ or Apple Arcade streaming, Apple Store repairs or even iCloud storage plans.
Palo Alto in ambush
Still according to theJournal, Apple's hegemony would however be threatened by other giants in the sector including… Facebook. With a competitor to Twitch now even entitled to its own dedicated tab on the social network, the site with the blue logo is also banking on Oculus to try to take the lead. The virtual reality headset maker is one of the most recognized pioneers in 360-degree gaming.
Anecdote :last February, Tim Cook assured that his company did not have a dominant position in any market. Missed. For the greatest happiness of shareholders?
