Better than OLED, this screen technology could finally break through in 2025

The company Foxconn, Apple's main subcontractor, has just announced the signing of a new partnership with the company Porotech. Together, they would like to develop Micro-LED screens for augmented reality products. Behind this new collaboration, the idea would be to produce better quality components, for a new generation of augmented reality headsets from Apple.

Foxconn has sudden interest in Micro-LED

In its forecast report for 2025, Foxconn announces thatMicro-LED display production expected to begin in last quarter of the year. A first wave of product marketing should therefore take place in spring 2026. For the moment, Foxconn only explains that this development effort meets the needs of its customers, without giving a name.

However, when we knowrelations between Apple and Foxconn, we suspect that the Cupertino company is not very far in this story and that it must even be the direct sponsor of this technological effort. After all, Apple would really need to switch to Micro-LED, both for its iPhones, iPads, MacBooks and the Apple Vision Pro.

A transition from OLED to micro-LED

Because for now, all of the Apple brand's most famous products use an OLED screen. This is the case of the latest iPhone 16, in the same way asl’iPad Pro M4, released last spring. Even MacBook Pros have not yet had the right to Micro-LED. The latest rumors about them nevertheless ensure that they should be among the first products affected by this technological shift.

Other rumors had mentioned the arrival of this technology on aApple Watch Ultra, as a life-size test for Apple. The smartwatch would have been the first of many, the transition to Micro-LED for Apple's entire product line could take a decade.
