Last September, theFinancial Timesrevealed that Jony Ive,father of the iPhoneand former high-ranking employee of Apple, hadmade a secret deal with Sam Altman, creator ofChatGPT. We learned that the two entrepreneurs are planning together to offer individualsan AI-based physical device. However, there were no other additional details during the revelations, apart from the fact thatSoftBankintended to investat least a billion dollars in the project.
Several weeks then passed without any information coming out on this subject, until last week whenBloombergrevealed some of them again. The newspaper told us that more than20 Apple employees, including pillars of the firm, planned to join the father of the iPhone and the creator ofChatGPTin their new secret project. The departures mainly come from Apple's design and design teams.
Among them, Tang Tan, who is described by his colleagues from Cupertino as the one who takes “critical decisions about Apple's most important products". Tang is still on the job now and is expected to jump ship in February, which is incidentally when Apple plans to release the Vision Pro.
Connected glasses, a revolution?
Until now we had no idea what could have motivated such figures to leave the ship, but theFinancial Timesraised the subject again in a report published a few days ago. The latter concerns the probable return of typical connected glassesGoogle Glass, and as reportedPatently Apple, the report suggests that Jony Ive and Sam Altman's project could concern this type of device.
John Hanke, who is a major player in popularizing augmented reality with his gamePokémon Go, also shared his opinion atFinancial Timeson the subject.According to him, connected glasses are a “much bigger opportunity” than the Apple Vision Pro at $3,499.The Apple firm, however, seems to be in the race, because it has filed no less than14 patents for smart glasses since September 28, 2023.
