S. Richard (Orange) discusses a return to 3 operators in France in the face of the price war in telecoms

Stéphane Richard, CEO of the Orange group, gave an interview for LesEchos.fr,to be found there. He provides various information on his action plan concerning the improvement of his copper network in France. But it also evokes areturn to 3 operatorsin France, which could be negotiated from the start of next year. The price war of recent months could indeed push some of the major players toconsider regrouping, to better resist:

Already in 2018, a return to 3 operators was close to seeing the light of day. Indeed,Bouygues Telecom and SFRhave been in negotiations, without any agreement being reached.Same in 2016, where Orange attempted to merge with Bouygues Telecom.

According to S. Richard, the first half of 2019 should open a new window of negotiations for apossible merger between 2 major operators.

He specifies that some will not be able to keep up with the current rhythm of almost monthly promotions, and for life for most from now on. Find special mobile plan offers here, on our dedicated page.

This race for new subscribers could therefore, according to the CEO, leave some players in the lurch, unless there is a merger between two. He adds, however, that he will not take any initiative. He will let other operators come to Orange if interested, but would rather rely on amerger between two of the three competitors, Bouygues Telecom, SFR and Free.

To see if common ground could then be found. Because since 2016, despite strong rumors of negotiations, the market has remained with 4 major operators.
