The US Department of Justice has just announced that it has apprehended Yaroslav Vasinskyi, a Ukrainian allegedly involved in REvil's criminal activities. As a reminder, this entity had attacked Quanta Computer, a partner of Apple, in order to extract a ransom after having stolen diagrams revealing the design of the brand's next devices.Laptops that saw the light of day last Octoberdid not then arouse the expected surprise among the media.
The prosecution does not specify this time whether Vasinskyi is singled out in this case, however it is affirmed in its public statement that the man played a role in a similar case. It was then the software developer Kaseya who was targeted by his organization.
What are the sequels to come?
For the moment, Vasinskyi, on whom the authorities have laid hands in Poland, has not yet been extradited to the United States but this will not be long. Upon his arrival across the Atlantic, he should then be immediately incarcerated while awaiting his trial. Two other people were also arrested in Romania, but we do not yet know their names or the charges against them or what will happen to their possible transfer.
At the same time, 6.1 million dollars (the equivalent of more than five million euros at the current exchange rate) were also seized by Washington. The sum was received by another suspect, Yevgeniy Polyanin, whose trace is still lost in Europe. An operation which would have taken place not only thanks to the support of friendly countries, the FBI, but also via private services whose content was not revealed by the government.
A judgment that promises to be major
Both Vasinskyi and Polyanin are being prosecuted for premeditated fraud, causing significant damage to protected computers, and money laundering. At most, the two targets respectively face one hundred and fifteen years and one hundred and forty-five years in prison (in the United States, the sentences are cumulative, sometimes reaching figures beyond reason).
