iPhone 15: if it displays this characteristic, I surrender

  • The USB-C port on the iPhone 15 would be limited to USB 2.0
  • This technology offers 20x slower speed than USB 3.1
  • Apple could also keep the Lightning

The socket for charging the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus would be limited to the USB 2.0 standard, according to new rumors. That is to say a standard which is more than twenty years old, and with a theoretical speed of only 480 Mbit per second. For comparison, the USB-C port ofFifth generation iPad Airis for its part equipped with the USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 standard. Count here up to 10 Gbit per second: that's 20 times more.

It's really a shame to see Apple limit its new high-end mobiles like this. However, according to the source behind these rumors, USB-C 3.1 could still be offered on the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max (or iPhone 15 Ultra). More expensive devices, therefore. The idea here is to better differentiate the ranges, which the Apple company has apparently been trying to do for several months now.

An even longer cable!

With this, and while we thought the accessory was 1.5 meters long, our source of the day instead relies on a more resistant USB-C cable 1.6 meters long to recharge the iPhone 15. This one this would be “more resistant” et “thicker“. And for good reason: according to stolen photos published a little earlier in the specialist press, the thread would be braided. This effectively makes it more robust in the face of intensive user demands. As a bonus, this is a good solution to prevent the cable from getting too tangled.

Unfortunately, Apple reportedly does not offer MFi certification for third-party accessory sellers. Understand that you will then no longer have the guarantee that your hardware will not risk damaging the iPhone when connected to it, except in the case of an official cable. An announcement which risks making observers of the European Parliament cringe. Indeed, this positioning can clearly be considered anti-competitive by the legislators of the old continent...

Doubts about the arrival of USB-C

Despite everything, remember that, for its part, Apple has not confirmed the arrival of the USB-C port for the moment. Furthermore, although the European Commission has effectively required smartphone manufacturers to switch to this standard, the Lightning still has a bright future ahead of it. Indeed, the deadline to get up to speed is the end of 2024. In theory, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro therefore still have the possibility of being powered by Cupertino's proprietary socket…
