Currently, Apple collaborates extensively with China, the country in which it produces the vast majority of its products, such as its iPhones and MacBooks. However, the apple brand is currently seeking to reduce its dependence on Beijing in the years to come,a point already subject to rumors for several months.
Leave China for India
To do this, Apple would choose to turn to India. According to theIndian Economic Times, the American firm plans to produce up to 40 billion dollars of smartphones in the country in the next 5 years. It would then go through manufacturers Foxconn and Wistron, reports the media.
Currently, Apple manufactures $220 billion worth of products in China, where that number is $0.5 billion for smartphones in India. If the company were to make such a decision, it could easily become the country's largest exporter.
A senior government official summed up to the media: “We expect Apple to produce $40 billion worth of smartphones, primarily for export through its contract manufacturers Wistron and Foxconn, taking advantage of the benefits of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) program».
To benefit from this program, a company must manufacture at least $10 billion worth of smartphones incrementally between 2020 and 2025.
However, the program in question has yet to be discussed, leading a source close to the matter to declare: “There are some problems with some of the clauses. For example, the valuation of the entire plant and machinery already used in its factories in China and elsewhere at 40% of this value and the extent of commercial information sought under the program are among the disadvantages". For its part, Apple has not commented on the subject.
