The first benchmark results for the GPU of the Apple silicon M1 Max SoC available on the new MacBook Pro 14 and 16″ were recently seen on Geekbench. Count68 870 points, a score significantly higher than the 20,581 points of the GPU of the Apple M1 chip released last year.
At the start of the week, we were entitled to the benchmark results for the CPU part in single core and multi-core. Let's recall the figures, under Geekbench 5, therefore, for the M1 Max chip:
- Single-core CPU: 1,749 points
- Multi-core CPU: 11,542 points
- GPU (32-core version): 68,870 points
If it is obvious that the MacBook Pro with M1 Max chip is much more powerful than the old 16″ MacBook Pro with Intel architecture and the 13″ MacBook Pro with M1 chip, the question arises for the Mac Pro. What is Apple's tower, dating from 2019 and still in the range, worth compared to the M1 Max chip? Knowing that the Mac Pro is obviously also intended for professionals, with a price to match: the basic configuration costsalmost €6,500 already.
Besides, here are its Geekbench scores, for the first price configuration, therefore:
- Single-core CPU: 1,033 points
- Multi-core CPU: 8,052 points
- GPU : 38 491 points
Also count 32 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD.
The 14″ MacBook Pro with the most powerful M1 Max chip also has 32 GB of RAM, but a 512 GB SSD, all for3 439 €. The machine is therefore almosthalf the price of the first Mac Pro, for much greater computing power. To match the Geekbench scores of the M1 Max chip, you must boost the Apple tower with a Radeon Pro W5700X graphics card and take the 12-core Intel Xeon W processor. These options raise the price of the beast to8 339 €.
Be careful, concluding here that it is better to buy a MacBook Pro M1 Max than a Mac Pro would be a mistake. The tower has advantages, notably options for the CPU part and the GPU part allowing it to expect scores well above those of the new Apple silicon chip. Also, the Mac Pro is more modular. And then its Intel architecture guarantees greater universality in terms of software and applications, which can make the difference in certain professional fields. Finally, let's not forget that Geekbench tests do not necessarily reflect reality.
But our curiosity pushed us to make the comparison. And the result is there: in basic configuration on paper, the Mac Pro is no longer a match for the most powerful MacBook Pro, despite a much higher price.
