Qualcomm 5G modems in 2020 iPhones?

A new report from Asia claims that the next 3 flagship iPhone models, successors to the iPhone XR, 11 and 11 Pro, will all include a 5G modem.

On the other hand, the 5G chip will not be from Apple, but from Qualcomm. Precisely, it will be the X55 chip model. The latter, on paper, displays very attractive maximum theoretical speeds: 7 Gb/s for download, 3 Gb/s for upload.

Note, however, that these are technical characteristics, and that actual flow rates will normally be well below these figures. They will depend in particular on each mobile telephone operator.

For 4G for example, the maximum theoretical download speed is 3 Gb/s (for the LET-Advanced version), when in practice, we are closer to 100 Mb/s, or even 600 Mb/s in certain countries ( LTE-Advanced).

We are still at a speed on paper multiplied by at least 2, for 5G compared to 4G.

The information regarding the arrival of Qualcomm for 5G on the next iPhones is important, because until then, analysts were counting on 5G modems from Intel, before Intel's modem division closed down several years ago. month.

We also know Apple is planning to design its own 5G chips. But to see such components integrate an iPhone, we would have to waituntil 2022.

For France, the year 2020 is indeed that of the turning point for 5G. Recently, Orange announced the arrival of 5G innext spring. ARCEP alsopublished this summerits obligations in terms of 5G deployment. And next year, each operator in France will have the mission of each covering 2 major cities in the country.
