When Apple comes to the rescue… from Google

Is Google in a monopoly position in the search engine sector, and is there an abuse of dominant position? This is what is at stake in the antitrust trial currently taking place in the United States. And in fact, the Mountain View firm was able to count on unexpected support during the hearing: Apple.

“Google is the best search engine”

Eddy Cue, executive vice president of the company, indeed came to testify about the agreement concluded with Google, which makes it the default search engine on the iPhone. The prosecution believes that this type of practice restricts competition, but this is not at all the manager's opinion.

Quoted byThe Verge, he estimates thus:“I always thought it was in Google's best interest, and ours, to do a deal. Certainly there was no viable alternative to Google at the time.”

And the latter added:“We're making Google the default search engine because we've always thought it was the best. We choose the best and make it easy for users to change it”.

As for Apple customers, he believes that their privacy is perfectly protected, because the agreement concluded with Google does not provide for the latter to require user connection. They also use the Safari browser which offers guarantees against tracking. It remains to be seen whether this argument will convince the judge. In any case, we know that Google is playing a very big role in this lawsuit which could force it to resell some of its activities.

As a reminder, Apple and Google are rivals in the smartphone market and the squabble between these two behemothsis often felt. Recently, we told you about this ad for Pixel phones whichopenly mockedof the new iPhone 15.
