RCS: universal iMessage is deployed for French Android users

All iMessage users know that in the iOS messaging app, there are two worlds, that of blue bubbles and that of green bubbles. The blue world designates the exchange of messages between Apple devices, and the green world that of exchanges with a smartphone from another brand.

There is a big gap in functionality between the two, the worst obviously being that of SMS characterized by a green bubble. A new standard and the successor to SMS, RCS, which offers functionalities similar to iMessage, has just been deployed by Google for French Android users.

RCS, for Rich Communications Services, is an improved version of SMS. This new standard is being pushed by mobile operators, as well as Microsoft and Google.

Once activated on a user's Android phone, by going to the settings of the Google Messages app, this allows two Android phones to benefit from the following features.

They can exchange messages via Wi-Fi, exchange files, send each other photos in better quality, receive read receipts, use group conversations or even see a typing indicator when a correspondent types a message.

If Apple integrated RCS into iOS, this would allow iOS and Android users to benefit from enhanced communication functions like those mentioned previously.

Mobile operators are reportedly pressuring Apple to add RCS to Messages. If Apple decides to follow this movement by integrating RCS, this would allow functionality similar to iMessage when communicating with an Android smartphone.

There is no guarantee, however, that Apple will meet the demand of mobile operators. Because that would be one less reason for users to stay on iOS.
