- Many users can't regain access to their Apple account after their iPhone is stolen
- This is because thieves generate a backup key, which is essential to create a new password
- The best advice to avoid this problem is to prefer Face ID to passcode, in public
According to a new survey byWall Street Journal, it is not uncommon to find iPhone users whose access to their Apple account has been blocked after their mobile has been stolen. The method used by the criminals, described by the same source a little earlier, consists of spying on victims in densely populated places – such as bars – to find out the access code of the device before taking possession of it discreetly. Then, before the targets can even try anything, the criminals activate an emergency key from the iOS settings.
This solution, however, was originally put in place by Apple to combat this type of incident. Thereemergency key, when generated by the owner of the iPhone, allows you to regain access to an account by resetting the password, even if the associated device has been lost. But of course, if it's someone else who creates this unique sequence of twenty-eight characters, then it's ruined.
How to protect yourself?
For the moment, the only solution that seems viable in the long term to combat this practice isuse of Face ID in public. This method does not reveal anything about the iPhone's access code, which in the worst case will still have to be typed on demand, but well away from prying eyes. Otherwise, it is advisable to ensure that you have a passcode that is strong enough to be difficult to remember at the first opportunity. Instead of the four simple numbers often preferred, it would therefore be a question of preferring a combination also with letters, and much longer.
Note also that Face ID is not yet available on all iPhones: only models equipped with the TrueDepth sensor on the front are entitled to it for the moment. The third generation iPhone SE, for its part, can be unlocked via the fingerprint sensorTouch ID. This solution also does the trick.
The question turns out to be more than serious
Good to know: in the event that your iPhone remains unavailable and the emergency key was nevertheless generated by an unknown person, then it will simply beunable to regain access to your Apple ID. And this, forever. The firm has no way of verifying your identity in this type of situation.
Some profilesprofessionalsnevertheless seem to have succeeded in winning their case, but resolutions of this type seem to remain relatively rare.
