As is now the tradition, the
WWDC once opened witha keynote mainly dedicated
to Apple software.
After months of waiting and rumors, things are now a little
clearer. As expected Tim Cook and his team lifted the
sail on iOS 8 but also on OS X 10.10 called
Yosemite.
For those who did not follow the live or to be sure of not having anything
missed, here isthe summary of the announcements of the
soirée:
Since it is an event dedicated to developers, Apple has chosen to
highlighted from the start of the conference through a long video in
which we were able to see how the applications created can facilitate and
sometimes even change our lives, our way of doing things.
As it should be, this type of event must point the finger at the
recent successes of the company. Thus, Tim Cook did not fail to emphasize
several important figures:
- 9 million developer accounts
- 80 million Macs worldwide, 50% of which run OS X Mavericks, the
latest version of OS - 500 million iPhones sold, 200 million iPads and 100 million iPods
Touch
OS X Yosemite : OS X à la sauce iOS 7
This new version of OS X is to the Mac what IOS 7 was to the iPhone. In
in other words, in OS X Yosemite the design change is
radical.
Although it is very different from what Mac users
know, this new version of the Mac system should not shock
since it largely uses the codes that we now know
for a year with iOS 7.
The system therefore emphasizes a 'flat' design, transparency effects
and even uses iOS icons. Apple also changed the font and offers
now a 'dark' mode. Like the iPhone, the Mac also winsson
'today' tab within the notification center, which can even be
personalized with widgets.
Obviously, everything is not just appearance and Apple this evening added
many new features such as:
- the improvement of the search which is now displayed in full screen, it
also becomes more powerful (wikipedia, plans etc.) - widgets for the notification center
- a multifunctional search bar that even acts as a converter
and displays in the center of the screen, can search movies on iTunes
- Apple also took advantage of the evening to unveiliCloud
Drivewhich allows access to documents stored in the Cloud at the
Dropbox way into a folder. Apple has even planned an iOS app to do
the same.
- MailDrop, a simplified way to send important
files easily and securely. - A new redesigned safari with a new 'tabs' view, and
particularly fast - AirDrop now works between OS X and IOS (finally!)
Apple also wants to play the ecosystem cardand has
worked a lot on the notion of continuity. Now it should be
even simpler to move from one device to another whether it's writing a
mail, to resume an Internet page on the iPad in the same place where you
was on the Mac. another example of this "continuity, a Mac without network
can detect the presence of an iPhone and offer to use it directly
as a wireless modem. The Mac can now send and receive text messages. Better
still, it is possible to use the Mac to answer a call or even to
contact a number found on the Web, all this using the functions of
l’iPhone.
As far as availability is concerned, developers will be able to have fun
with OS X Yosemite today. For the general public it will be for the fall
unless you choose to rjoin the public beta this
summer. Price wise, this year againOS X Yosemite is free
!
iOS 8: following on from iOS 7
If for OS X, the changes are important, Apple wanted to see iOS 8
as the continuity of what we know. No revolution this year,
but great developments for users, but also for
developers (which will then materialize for users do not have
fear).
As expected, some rumors come true. So
Healthbook will indeed appear, but in the form of a simple app
titledHealthand “Healthkit”. Apple still reserved
some surprises including interactive notifications. This offers
for example the possibility ofreply to a message directly from
the notification. It also works with third-party apps
like Facebook...
Accessible by a double click on the home button, the multitasking screen
now allows you to access contacts more easily, as you can see
To be :
As is the case on Mac, the search has been revised on IOS as well and
can be used to search for an app on the App Store as well as to find a
contact, an email and more…
The iPhone keyboard has also been revised and should be even faster
thanks to a new predictive system which suggests... the next word we
is supposed to type. It is able to adapt to the context, the application and
the interlocutor. Good news since this technology called Quicktype
will be available in French.
Better yet, iOS will now accept third-party keyboards, so we'll see
arrive at “Swype” type solutions where it is not necessary to lift a finger
between keys, in all applications instead of seeing them restricted
like now. (See this
article for example)
iMessage was also entitled to its share of improvements such as the possibility
to leave a group conversation, activate 'do not disturb' for a
only conversation, but also sending voice messages or videos
thanks to a directly accessible button.
As announced a little above, a new app is appearing with
iOS 8 :iCloud Drive. It allows you to manage content
iCloud and open documents in other apps.
The presentation was also an opportunity to show dedicated functionalities
to the management of machines in business. For example, Apple allows you to protect
certain apps with a password, iOS 8 also better manages
documents.
But the big news this year is health. With
the Health application, all health-oriented information is grouped together
in one place.
To fill out its dashboards, Health will dig into apps
third parties, possibly communicating with accessories. Health can also
share your data with healthcare professionals (probably only
in the US initially).
The family is also in the spotlight sincea single card
credit can now be used to fund iTunes devices and accounts
up to 6 people. The head of the family will then be notified of the purchases
and, when it is necessary to pay, must give permission. Practical, right?
With iCloud, all photos taken will now be available to everyone
the devices. Obviously, a new search function comes
accompany these numerous photos which will flood into our devices.
New editing tools are also appearing in the app
iPhoto on iOS as on Mac: adjustment of brightness, contrast, etc. are
on the program. All this is done within the limit of iCloud storage which increases to 1
dollar per month for 20 GB.
It was anticipated, Siri gains new skills like
musical recognition of Shazam, purchase on the App Store but also
real-time voice recognition and activation of listening by a simple
voice command (the equivalent of OK Google)
iOS 8 on the developer side: a little opening
Apple also wanted to pamper developers by promising new
possibilities and improvements. This version of iOS is announced as offering
the greatest number of new features for developers since the
creation of the App Store.
- improved search on the App Store
- possibility of selling application bundles: several apps
sold at a lower price for example - the arrival of app demo videos on the App Store
- the integration of beta test management via the Testflight tool into
l’App Store - Apple announces to offer 4000 new APIs
But that's not all sincewidgets appear in
the notification center.
Another major new feature: extensions. Apple, which has visibly
decided to open up its system a little, now allows third-party apps to become
lend a hand to native apps to retouch photos, for example.
Better yet,alternative keyboards are also
authorized.
Developers who wish can also choose to offer the
unlocking their application via Touch ID.
As expected,HomeKitappears, bringing in
Apple in the house. Apple has worked to make its standard compatible with
many brands. To put it simply, in the future, Siri should be able to
open the garage door!
In the disorder Apple also announced CloudKit, photo APIs, a
firmware called Metal which should further improve the 3D quality of
games on IOS, SpriteKit which is dedicated to casual gaming, SceneKit but also
a new programming language called Swiftfaster,
safer and simpler than Objective C.
iOS 8 will be available on machines from iPhone 4s and iPad
2.
Let's finally end this iSoirée with the announcement of theavailability
iOS 8 available today for developers. For others, it
will have to wait until the fall, probably in September as
usually.
We will come back to these new features in detail, function by function in
the days to come!
What do you remember from these announcements?
