The Series 7 charges faster, but on one condition

The last Apple Event was an opportunity for its organizer to lift the veil on a highly anticipated device: the Apple Watch Series 7. And even if few changes are planned with this edition, one of them has particularly caught our attention. It concerns the wireless charging of the device, announced as 33% faster than with the Series 6 released a year earlier.

The argument is not up for debate –far from there– but one question remained unanswered since this announcement. This concerns equipment suitable for fast charging, the technical characteristics of which were not specified during the event. What's more, although Apple does provide the USB cable that powers its watch, the wall adapter has not been available for several months.

Your charger is probably already compatible

In a new document published the day before yesterday, Apple specifies that it only takes forty-five minutes for its Series 7 to go from 0 to 80% autonomy. Better, since the company adds which official Apple USB-C adapters are compatible. These are:

  • 18-watt model
  • 20-watt model
  • 29-watt model
  • 30-watt model
  • 61-watt model
  • 87-watt model
  • 96-watt model

As we can see, iPhone chargers (including the fastest) and MacBook Pro chargers are therefore affected. In this way, Apple effectively confirms its ambitions which aim to reduce its ecological impact by generating less waste.

About third-party manufacturers

Apple also clarified what the prerequisites are when using a third-party accessory. It is therefore important to check that the adapter you have chosen supports the USB-PD (Power Delivery) standard. As for the power, it must be at least 5 watts. Of course, we recommend that you choose MFi certified products rather than very affordable items whose provenance you don't really know.

Note: according to Apple, fast charging for Series 7 is not available in Argentina, Vietnam and India. It's impossible to know what's behind these statements, but don't hesitate to share your hypotheses with us in the comments. It seems anyway that your equipment will work as long as the outlet is adequate, which is also the case in these regions.
