Today, videoconferencinghas become an essential work tool, even more so since the COVID-19 pandemic. Since this period, tenors have experienced exponential growth likeMicrosoft Teamsand Zoom, and it is precisely on their land thatSignalwants to play.
The messaging application, which had already introduced encrypted video calls in 2020, is today taking a (big) new step in its evolution. On the program: a new interface, sharing links and management tools inspired by market leaders, while maintaining its privacy-centric DNA.
An arsenal of new features
The flagship innovation of this update is the introduction of a new tabCalls(see capture below). This centralized interface now makes it possible tomanage all video communications: launching calls, creating sharing links and viewing conversation history.
Like Zoom or Teams, users can generate reusable links for their recurring meetings, thus freeing oneself from the systematic creation of groups. «If you like making group calls on Signal without having to create a chat for each group of friends or colleagues, you'll love today's new feature: call links. Share a link with your contacts on Signal, and they can join the call in one click, without needing to create a dedicated group »explains the companyon his blog.

Management tools are also multiplying. Organizers can name their calls, control participant access and manage individual rights (exclusion, blocking). A system of “hand raised», similar to that of Google Meet, makes it easier to speak. On the desktop version, users now have several display modes: grid, lateral or a mode that focuses on the speaker.
A balance between modernity and confidentiality
Signal maintains its promise of a private communication spacewhile adapting to new uses. «We're not the only ones to see it: video calls are now the preferred meeting point for businesses, teams and groups of friends around the world. Signal, for its part, remains faithful to its mission of offering a confidential communication space”she explains.
The platform now supportsvideo calls with up to 50 participants, approaching the standards established by WhatsApp (32 participants) which has also enriched its offer with screen sharing and the highlighting of speakers since last June. These new features are already availableon most compatible operating systems.
- Signal enriches its videoconferencing features with a dedicated tab, sharing links and management tools inspired by Zoom and Teams.
- Video calls on Signal can accommodate up to 50 participants while ensuring privacy.
- The platform strikes a fair balance between innovation and data protection.
