A
big onesnew features of iOS 10
unveiled at WWDC 2016, isopening the voice assistant Siri to
third-party applications, allowing users to give
voice commands to perform certain actions in apps that support
Siri.
However, Siri will notnot fully openand goes
retain somelimitationsin iOS 10. At first
time, the Siri API will only work with6 types
d’application: order a taxi or VTC (like Uber),
messaging, photo and video search, payments (paypal), VoIP calls
(skype), training sessions (fitness activities).
A user can ask Siri questions byusing the
app namehe wants to ask in his question, and Siri can
provide an answer without having to launch the app in question. For example, it is
possible to ask Siri to send a message to a WhatsApp contact.
In third-party apps that support Siri, the voice assistant and therefore Apple
takes care of the voice recognition and interpretation part of the question,
and only provides third-party apps with the data necessary to allow them to
to return a response using Sirikit APIs.
Apple initially decided to only target certain types of apps
of which Siri is able to understand and interpret requests, such as
areas of messaging and purchasing.
However, the Cupertino company plans to expand the categories in the future
of apps that can use Siri, we are thinking in particular of streaming apps
music (Spotify, Deezer), emails, task managers, and much more
others.
