TitledBeautiful weddingsin French in the text, this novel by Edith Wharton published in 1913 tells the story of Undine Spragg, an ambitious young woman from the Midwest who wishes to live the American dream and climb the social ladder in New York City. To do this, she begins by marrying Ralph Marvell, a young man from an old rich family who benefits more from his title than from his finances.
