The CHIP standard arrives at the end of the year, perhaps with HomeKit

Whilewe recently learned that it would arrive in 2021, the projectConnected Home over IP(abbreviated as CHIP) has just revealed a little more about its launch schedule. We have just learned that the first products compatible with the new standard will arrive as planned, by the end of the year. In any case, this is what the Zigbee Alliance, a major stakeholder in the initiative, said in a recent webinar.

The group has not specified an exact date, however, which once again leaves many bets open – nothing has yet been published on Augur. However, we can assume that smart devices will be released by the fourth quarter, which gives the main partner manufacturers time to modify their own solutions.

List of compatible products

Aiming to universalize pairings in the home automation market, CHIP will initially welcome the following articles:

  • lighting, probably such as Philips Hue
  • blinds:Ikea already offers its owna Europe
  • the heating, ventilation and air conditioning sector
  • smart TV
  • connected locks
  • security systems
  • wifi routers

For example, today we find compatible productsHomeKitfrom the manufacturers August (alarms) or tado ° (air conditioning). It is therefore quite likely that some of them will be updated to work with the CHIP standard by December. Of course, these are just hypotheses and other manufacturers are probably already on their way to certification.

Concurrence

Apple isn't the only company working with CHIP. We also find Google, which sells connected thermostats via its subsidiaryNest. The latter was bought for $3.2 billion by Alphabet in 2014. Amazon is also participating in the operation. For its part, Jeff Bezos' multinational produces Echo speakers powered by the proprietary voice assistant Alexa, a direct competitor to Siri and Cortana.

It is not uncommon for GAFAM to join together in organizations of this type. If it happens that their ambitions are of a practical nature as here, it is also sometimes to directly influence government policies. This is demonstrated by the billions of dollars spent on lobbying each year by interested parties.
