On iOS 17 passwords are becoming increasingly rare

Apple doesn't really like passwords. The Cupertino company prefers to trust biometric data and recognition solutions developed internally (Face ID and Touch ID). With iOS 17, iPadOS 17 and macOS Sonoma, Apple is taking a new step in the use of this information.

For the first time, users will be able to use Face ID and Touch ID to replace their Apple ID password. To do this, the apple brand intends to use“passkeys”, cryptographic solutions that it considers more secure than traditional passwords.

This change currently affects many applications and services developed by Apple such as iCloud.com. Other options should follow in the coming weeks.

An evolution of “sign in with Apple”

Apple notably announces in its summary of this new feature that passkeys will be supported by third-party applications and websites. Those who already use the “sign in with Apple” feature should be first served.

Anyone who has the iOS, iPadOS or macOS beta can already test this new feature. For the others you will have to waitthe beginning of Septemberin order to download a stable and general public version of the update.
