Streaming tax: Deezer warns, prices may increase

France could be affected in the coming months by a record increase in prices for subscriptions for musical streaming. Several platforms, includingDeezer, announced their intention to revise their prices up in the event of adoption of a bill called "Tax Streaming".

Its purpose is to better remunerate the artists by taking a little silver from streaming platforms. Since the Revolution of the Music Industry in the current of the 2000s, these subscription digital platforms have given the rules of the game.

Deezer: collateral too bad the law?

For Stéphane Rougeot, Managing Director of Deezer, the bill to tax streaming platforms is seen as a death stop. Deezer has the distinction of being a French solution. As such it has more than half of her subscribers in France.

"This new tax will affect us disproportionately, we make 60 % of our turnover in France, the others are 3 %". This new tax, wanted directly by the Élysée, could therefore be fatal at the French platform, already in financial difficulty.

Why do a streaming tax?

The streaming tax could be voted by Parliament at the start of the school year in order to better pay the artists, but also ensure the "cultural greatness" of France. Concretely, the fianças state could deire 1 to 2 % of the turnover of streaming platforms to redistribute this money in the tricolor cultural system.

According to Senator Julien Bargeton, author of a report on the subject, the implementation of such a tax may not have an impact on purchase prices for customers. Indeed a similar tax has been set up toNetflix(in order to contribute for the CNC) and the arrival of this financial contribution has led to any increase in exceptional prices.
