A report from the Chinese newspaper Economic Daily News claims that Taiwanese subcontractors are currently in discussions with Apple for theproduction of microLED screen for the Apple Watch.
MicroLED: not before 2020?
No information regarding a possible launch of a new version of the watch with this screen technology is specified, however.
But as our colleagues at 9to5Mac point out, it takes around 9 months between the start of component production and the release of the product which contains these components.
We should therefore not see the appearance of an Apple Watch with a microLED screenavant 2020. Apple having accustomed us to releasing a new version of its watch every year since the arrival of Series 0 in April 2015, in 2019, we should therefore still be entitled to an Apple Watch with OLED screen. This will theoretically be the Series 5. The microLED would then appear on the Apple Watch Series 6 of 2020 if we trust the source.
MicroLED : OLED 2.0
This technology makes it possible to reduce the consumption of the screen, but also to improve its brightness, as well as to save space inside the case thanks to a thinner and lighter panel.
Foxconn, one of the major subcontractors and partner of Apple for iPhone screens in particular, recently revealed that it is betting big on microLED. But the Apple firm could also eventually design its own microLED screens, in order to provide enough equipment to equip all its products in the future. Ming-Chi Kuo,a few months ago, also predicted the arrival of a MacBook, an iPad and an Apple external screen with microLED screen, between 2019 and 2021.
For the iPhone, classic OLED should still be there this year.
