L’application iPhone et iPad
Duet DisplayEastreleased a few years ago
weeks. She quickly made people talk about her because she offers a
certainly known function, transforming your mobile machine into an additional screen for
the Mac, but it does it differently from the solutions seen until now
comme iDisplayor
Air Display.
The particularity of Duet concerns the communication whichdoes not happen
not wireless in WiFi between the computer and the mobile machinebut by
the USB cable. Corollary: a thread in the leg, but advantages: this
recharges the iPad/iPhone on the one hand and avoids network access concerns on
certain WiFi and above all ensures a constant and significant flow rate
when it comes to avoiding lag.
After testing the Duet solution on iPhone 6 Plus and iPad Air 2, here is
our opinion:
The installation of the app carried out on iPhone or iPad, it is also necessary
download and launch a free app on the Mac. This oneis available here
Then, in our case it was just a matter of authorizing a second screen in
Mac settings.
The Duet app must then be launched on the Mac, then on the machine
mobile. And presto, it's almost immediate, the two apps communicate, the
Mac then has a second screen. The size adjustment is
carried out without worry, nevertheless, settings allow you to choose other
resolutions or to play on the refresh rate (30 or 60 times per
second), performance (which influences consumption).
On the side of the iPad (or iPhone 6 Plus), after having chosen its position in
the Mac settings for greater ease, you cantransfer the
windows to enjoy them in parallel with the main screen, this happens
done by sliding them with the mouse or trackpad, as if a real second
screen was present.
Touch screen is supportedand allows you to interact with
the display. On the other hand, the chosen solution is less fluid and practical than this
that we usually have on the iPad. Indeed, the finger manipulates
makes the mouse cursor. Slight downside on this because it is not
with extraordinary precision (especially on a small screen), but with use,
using the mouse remains faster than touching the second
screen.
For the rest, the use is very natural: the windows and the
mice switch from one screen to another without problem while the sound remains
returned by the Mac (this is a bit surprising at first). We particularly appreciate
a management which appeared very reliable: when we
turn off the iPad or unplug it then plug it back in, everything comes back into place
automatically. Likewise, when the orientation of the machine is
modified, it is automatically managed: the screen resizes to fit
adapt. Impressive.
In terms of usefulness, as much on iPad, you can use very
pleasantly the second screen, on the other hand on iPhone, even with an iPhone 6
Plus, this remains very anecdotal, unless you really want to monitor a page
or a particular app screen, by adjusting the resolution
possibly.
In terms of fluidity, everything will depend on the desired resolution and the
power of the Mac as well as the iPad. In my case, with a recent MacBook Air
mid-range and an iPad Air 2, no slowdown of the Mac. Same with
the iPhone 6 Plus, all parameters (resolution, refresh being
pushed to the maximum). On the display side, when you transfer a window from a
screen to another, we note that it is slightly less fast and fluid than a
real second screen but it remains very comfortable.
In the end, Duet appears as aefficient application, perfectly
integrated with iOS, which provides additional utility to the iPad,
while allowing you to work more efficiently. Advantage on solutions
competing: its use is possible even on the move, without WiFi and
without the problems of firewalls and speed of Wifi networks (shared
notably). Conversely, this impliesto accept the presence of a
cablebetween the two machines and requires support allowing
Place the iPad comfortably with the cable plugged in.
The app is rated 4.5 stars out of 5 in the App Store, we confirm, none
doubt: she deserves them.
In terms of price, the app is sold for 15.99 euros, more than its
competitors operating via WiFi:
