Originally it was planned that the filmGreyhoundreleased in cinemas, a project which has been revised taking into account the health situation in the world. So,the launch of the film will take place as a preview on the Apple TV+ streaming platformfrom July 10.
Dismay for Tom Hanks
In the casting ofGreyhound, we find Tom Hanks in the role of Commander Krause. He spoke about the modified release of the film in an interview withGuardiannot long ago. The actor expressed his dismay at seeing the film released on the US streaming service after being pulled from cinemas.
Regarding this change, Tom Hanks said that it was a "absolute heartbreak», adding to this: “I don't want to anger my Apple overlords, but there is a difference in picture and sound quality". He therefore clearly thinks that the feature film was intended to be seen on the big screen rather than on television or on a computer.
This decision follows the repurchase of the film rightsGreyhoundby Apple following a competition between several entities. The apple brand put its hand in its pocket to pay out $70 million last May.
If Tom Hanks addressed this criticism to Apple, it is not the first nor the last time that the actor has collaborated with the apple brand. He is currently working as a co-producer onMasters of the Air, a miniseries focusing on the actions of the Eighth United States Air Force during World War II. The latter will be released on Apple TV+ on a date which has not yet been communicated by the company.
As for Greyhound, the film tells how US Navy ships cross a risk zone while being followed by Nazi submarines. Without air support, they must fend for themselves for several consecutive days and make the right decisions.
