Theaugmented reality: this is the new credo of the next wearables from the Apple brand. Discreetly, the brand is in fact developing several connected objects including a VR headset but also smart glasses. The simple concept would then more or less take up that adopted by competing Google Glass, with information displayed on the translucent glasses and therefore superimposed on the external environment.
At the moment, little is known about this potential product. But a new report released today by the Asian mediaNikkeireveals, thanks to sources probably from Apple's subcontracting circuits on site, some additional details. We learn in particular that the service providerTSMC–that we no longer present– would collaborate with Cupertino on this no longer really so confidential project.
New screens
The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company thus seems to have planned the manufacture ofmicro OLED screens dedicated to Apple Glassin the factories of his country. This process, more efficient than LCD on glass, integrates the panel directly onto the wafers (also called “wafers” in French). The ultimate goal is simple:save energybut also offer aformat plus compact, with less thickness.
These three characteristics are essential for frames close to the temples. In this regard, many remember the model designed by Alphabet whose battery installed in the branches heated up too much to the point of having to quickly remove them. Since then, efforts have nevertheless been made and glasses are now confined to the professional sector.
No production yet
TSMC, already the bar of all A14 Bionic processors installed inhigh-end iPhones, is a partner of choice for Apple. Tim Cook's company also relied on its skills to design the M1 CPUs embedded in the Macs of the silicon program. This aims to free itself from Intel, in favor of an even more internalized design.
Measuring less than three centimeters, the Glass micro LED screens are currently being tested. Their mass production should not be launchedbefore several years.
