A man sentenced by a judge… via the Skype application on iPhone

If justice is one of the sectors that is subject to digital transformation, it was difficult to imagine - until a few years ago - that a prison sentence could be pronounced via an iPhone.

«I conduct the hearing from my iPhone — a marvel of modern technology»

This is now done in England, where Judge Nicholas Barker sentenced a man from his smartphone usingl’application Skype. It would appear that such a decision has never been declared via such a device in the world before today.

Originally, Nicholas Barker was going to use a laptop, but he quickly found himself faced with technical difficulties which forced him to turn to the Apple smartphone. At the start of the hearing, he said: “I do[the audience, Editor’s note]from my iPhone — a marvel of modern technology. My apologies for the delay this morning due to technical difficulties».

For his part, the elderly suspect received a 26-month prison sentence after he stabbed his brother last December. Victim of a perforated lung, he nevertheless survived the attack.

In addition to this exception, British judges have been using videoconferencing for several years using the Skype application installed on a laptop. This is even more the case since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, which has forced a multitude of sectors to take measures to prevent the spread of the virus.

If France began a first phase of deconfinement on May 11 before relaxing it at the beginning of June, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson must speak in the afternoon to announce the reopening of all businesses.
