If you don't want iOS 15.1, Apple offers you iOS 14.8.1

While all eyes were on yesterdaythe deployment of iOS 15.1, another software version was discreetly put online at the same time by Apple. This is iOS 14.8.1. In short, everyone has the choice toinstall one or the other of these versions (our tutorial is available right here)taking of course their respective contents into account.

iOS 14.8.1 or iOS 15.1? The differences

Neither iOS 15.1 nor iOS 14.8 are updates that can be considered “major”. The first is nevertheless better provided than the second, given that it includes additional functionalities.

What's new in iOS 15.1:

  • SharePlay: to watch a film or an Apple TV+ series together using the FaceTime app with up to eighteen compatible people, also works with the Apple Music streaming catalog or Podcasts
  • HomePod: Lossless audio, Dolby Atmos and Spatial audio become compatible with the speaker
  • Photo: possibility to deactivateautomatic macro mode
  • Video: filming available in ProRes format (on iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max only)
  • Apple Watch: fixed the bug which prevented you from unlocking the iPhone 13 from the watch with a mask
  • Apple Plans: Look Around offers better quality images in some cases
  • other bug fixes

What's new in iOS 14.8.1:

  • stability improvements
  • security improvements to combat viruses (including audio, WebKit, ColorSync, Kernel, Sidecar, Continuity Camera, CoreGraphics, graphics card drivers and voice control)

Explanations

It was a little earlier this year that Apple clarified that it would give users the choice in updates, but without detailing its real intentions. If we can assume that this is a way of reassuring those who prefer to wait to avoid possible technical problems with iOS 15.1, it is in reality possible that the reasons for this strategy are quite different.

Indeed, by dividing its versions of iOS into two distinct “routes”, Apple is perhaps preparing the ground for a future major version which would no longer be compatible with its oldest smartphones. It is true that the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, for example, are still compatible with the Apple operating system today, which has been surprising for several years. But we are not immune to a step forward, which would then make them obsolete.

With iOS 14.8.1, however, Apple would still guarantee some protection against malware.
