New study proves the superiority of the iPhone (in terms of sales)

2023 was a very good year for Apple, despite a difficult context. According toIDC data, the Cupertino company, for the first time, shipped more smartphones than Samsung, and became the world number 1. For his part,Canalys has published a Top 10 of the most shipped devices, last year, which is largely dominated by Apple.

Today, Apple's success is confirmed by a new study which is, this time, published by the company Counterpoint Research. This is a ranking of the most sold (but not shipped) smartphones in 2023, with figures which are therefore different from those of Canalys.

And in this ranking, Apple's domination of the smartphone market is even more obvious. Indeed, for the first time, according to Counterpoint, the 7 best-selling smartphones in 2023 were all iPhones. These are:

  • The iPhone 14 (3.9% market share)
  • The iPhone 14 Pro Max (2.8% market share)
  • The iPhone 14 Pro (2.4% market share)
  • The iPhone 13 (2.2% market share)
  • The iPhone 15 Pro Max (1.7% market share)
  • The iPhone 15 Pro (1.4% market share)
  • The iPhone 15 (1.4% market share)

The other models in this Top 10 are Samsung's Galaxy A14 5G, Galaxy A04e and Galaxy A14 4G.

The iPhone is gaining popularity in emerging countries

Otherwise, Counterpoint also explains in its publication that if Apple was able to stabilize its sales in 2023, it is partly thanks to sales in emerging countries, such as India, or those in the Africa and Middle East region.“In 2023, India became the fifth smartphone market to surpass 10 million iPhone units sold in a single year, highlighting the growing importance of the market for Apple. These factors contributed to sales of the iPhone 15 series matching the performance of the iPhone 14 series in 2022”, we can read in the Counterpoint publication.

Regarding the iPhone 13, which was still in the Top 10 of 2023, Counterpoint explains that it sold well in Japan, thanks to promotional offers offered by the operators. These deals would have made the iPhone 13 very competitive with newer models. And in India,“the value proposition of the iPhone 13 has made it a popular choice.”

Previously, Counterpoint alsohighlighted premiumizationof the smartphone market worldwide. In essence, instead of buying affordable smartphones, more and more people are buying premium models that they keep for longer. And in emerging countries, owning a recent premium smartphone is increasingly used as a social marker. This is also one of the factors that boosted iPhone sales in 2023.
