The very popular media playerVLChas just beenupdated with many new features.While we presented those of 3.4.0 to you in May 2023,the application is now evolving towards version 3.5.0. This upgrade also concerns iOS, iPadOS, as well as Apple TV.
Better Car Play integration
While he wasintegrated in the latest update, CarPlay now benefits from better support byVLC. In his press release,videolan, the parent company ofVLC, announcement:
We're happy to announce a major update to VLC for iOS, iPadOS and tvOS adding playback history, A to B playback, Siri integration, support for external subtitles and audio tracks , a way to access favorite folders on local network servers, improved CarPlay integration and lots of small improvements.
Here are all the new features listed in the app's App Store page:
- addition of the History function,
- added support for the A->B loop,
- saving player position and state for media played from file servers and external devices,
- caching generated illustrations for external media,
- added Siri integration to control playback in VLC and access local media,
- added the ability to add favorite folders when browsing file servers,
- added support for subtitles and audio tracks stored in external files,
- improved playback speed configuration in audio player,
- setting up media editing actions during a search,
- display of the duration of playlists in the preview,
- added better configuration of control gestures during playback,
- added missing support for the mka extension,
- added an option to reset application settings,
- separation of autoplay next media option between playlists and other collections,
- gathering app appearance options,
- addition of a long press gesture on the image format button to display the different ratios,
- added an option to save the last reading speed value,
- improved CarPlay support for artists and playlists,
- improved resume playback option for very long media,
- fix connection to local servers discovered via Bonjour protocol,
- improving the accessibility of buttons linked to reading modes,
- addition of a new interface for donations,
- addition of a direct link redirecting to user documentation from the Settings screen,
- updating the first steps screen when first opening the application,
- correction of resumption of playback when playback is in loop mode for the first media,
- fixed playback of mp3+cdg files for karaoke.
Popular but poorly rated?
Despite a 3.3 rating in the App Store,VLC media playerremains popular with smartphone users, but more so amongAndroid. By comparing app ratings within the App Store andPlay Store, we observe a huge difference. The 3.3 out of 5 comes from only 366 Apple user reviews at the time of writing. Looking towardsAndroid, we observe that it is much better rated with 4.1 stars awarded by 1.83 million reviews.
